  2. Gave me goosebumps on the description of the distinction of the "suburbs" vs "stations". I used to and still am the kind of guy who goes out to correct a newbie on calling these places as stations as against suburbs.

I second you on the humidity factor. But truth be told, I've stayed in Mumbai for a good 16 yrs of my life and before leaving Mumbai for education and jobs, I always felt comfy in Mumbai. Plus the humidity gets to you mostly in the summer months. The monsoons bind you in a crazy spell and the kind of waves that lash against your face on the Marine Drive or opposite Gateway of India is pristine to say the least. I dearly miss that.

Its crazy pace and the crowd's tenacity to drive you with it wherever it goes (especially while getting down or boarding a local in Churchgate or Nalasopara - do check this) is weirdly amusing to a beginner. I still can proudly rattle ALL the names from Churchgate to Virar as any proud Mumbaikar would. ;)

I've had the chance to explore it from Virar (Its native name is Arnala btw) to the bylanes of Bandra to the really old marathi stronghold of Girgaum (Parle now has more gujjus than marathis) to even the extremes of Panvel. Just for funsies, I remember sneaking out in the nights to get down at stations like Reay Road, Dockyard Road and Cotton Green. Wouldn't recommend it now though.

More than the humbleness and straightforward nature of the rickies and cabbies, I like the general nature of people in Mumbai. Its simple, on your face, devoid of any diplomacy and helpful. And the night life. Its the only city which doesn't just shut its doors on a sunset like these boring old overhyped cities of Bangalore or Pune.

All said, I'd recommend you try out this place in Girgaum (get down at Charni Road East and walk straight asking for directions) - Vinay Hotel - http://bit.ly/qKjGCj . Check the link for details.

  4. Am yet to grasp the intricacies of the marathi language to use it in writing. Haven't even read any books in marathi to be frank. Not even seen a movie. However, had been swayed by Pu La ani tyaanchi muktafale on TV and later YouTube.
